Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that corrects the shape, position or size of the ears. It often treats prominent ears by correcting the improperly formed helix. With this operation, the shape of the ear is improved and the ear is placed closer to the head. The procedure can be applied to children from 5 years old, when the ears have almost completed their development, but also to adults.

What should be done before surgery?

After taking a complete medical history, photographs of the area are taken and the appropriate surgical method is determined.

It is recommended to stop smoking 4 weeks before and 2 weeks after the operation thus reducing the chances of complications. Use of aspirin, anticoagulants and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen should be avoided preoperatively.

What happens during surgery?

The operation is performed under local anesthesia with or without sedation, while in small children general anesthesia is needed.

The incisions are made behind the ears so that they are not visible. In rare cases, the incision may be made in front of the ears, hidden in the inner folds. The shape of the cartilage is then corrected with internal sutures.

After the operation, the ears are covered with special pads and an elastic bandage.

What happens after surgery?

The first post-operative check-up takes place one day after surgery.

After otoplasty your ears will be covered with bandages for protection and support. It is common for your ears to be swollen and red. The elastic bandage is removed on the fifth postoperative day.

After the bandages are removed, a dedicated headband will be placed over your ears at night for six weeks.

Side sleeping should be avoided, as should ear rubbing.

The stitches are removed 7-10 days after the surgery.

What are the possible complications?

Possible complications, as in any surgery, exist, but they are controllable and limited in incidence. Some possible complications are: bleeding - hematoma, infection, asymmetry in the placement of the ears (due to changes during the healing process), changes in the sensation of the skin (this phenomenon is usually temporary)
